This study uncovers the relationships between work engagement at country level and a variety of national economic, governance, and cultural indicators. Work engagement data were used from the 6^th European Working Conditions Survey (2015) that includes 43,850 employees from thirty-five European countries. The most engaged countries are found in Northwestern Europe, whereas the least engaged are located in Southern Europe and on the Balkans. The Netherlands ranks first with 19% highly engaged employees. Work engagement is positively – and curvilinear – related to the nation’s economic activity (GDP) and productivity. Also engagement is higher in countries with lower work centrality that value leisure over work; in well-governed countries with a strong a democracy, which are high in integrity, and low in corruption and gender inequality; and in individualistic countries (read more).
